What is Gwei?

Gwei is one of the denominations of Ether (ETH or more commonly Ethereum cryptocurrency). In a way, Gwei is to ETH, what cents are to the dollar. Gwei is used to calculate the Gas — fee paid to record transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.

Gwei is also called Shannon, named after Claude Shannon, a cryptographer and “father of information theory."
